Donald JOHNSTON (SN 3246) was born at Linton but was living in Macarthur Street with his wife Adeline, employed as a motor engineer, when he enlisted as a 44 year old in March 1916. He trained at Ballarat, Geelong and Broadmeadows before embarking aboard the Berrima in July. He sailed first to England then crossed to the battlefields of France in November to serve with the 29th Battalion. Illness cut short his active service and in May 1917 he departed England to return to Australia where, on August 6th, he was discharged due to ‘overage and lumbago’. He died in April 1937, aged 64.
