John Davies McGREGOR (SN 156) was a 26 year old tent maker from Lydiard Street when he enlisted on August 19th 1914. He trained with the Australian Army Medical Corps and was attached to the 2nd Field Ambulance. He embarked from Melbourne on October 19th on the Wiltshire, joined the first contingent in Albany, and sailed to Egypt. In early April 1915 he was part of the massing of troops at Lemnos, and on April 25th he served in support of the Gallipoli landing. On November 24th he was evacuated from Gallipoli suffering from pleurisy and this was to signal the start of an ongoing series of health issues. In early 1916 illness forced him to hospital for several weeks but by June he was able to join the 2nd Field Ambulance in France. Early in 1917 he was diagnosed as suffering from otitis media (middle ear inflammation) which persisted for many months. He was assigned to transport duties on the Carpentaria and departed England on August 8th 1918 to return to Australia. He was suffering from ‘hammer toes and otitis media’ and was discharged as medically unfit on December 17th 1918. He died in July 1962 at the age of 74.
