Mary McAllen was born in the 1830s at Scalpnagown, Country Clare. She immigrated to Australia and settled at Warrenheip near Ballarat. Mary was the wife of Michael Hanrahan who was present at the Eureka Stockade battle. Due to Michael’s involvement in the battle, the assumption can be made that Mary McAllen was a party by association with many other players in the Eureka battle. Mary and Michael married on the 14th January 1862, she was 26 years of age while he was 33. They had the following children, Thomas, Bridget, Daniel, Mary, and Michael.
Mary died aged 77 years at her residence in Bungaree and is buried at the Ballarat New Cemetery Roman Catholic A Section 18, Grave 08, along with her husband Michael who died four years later.
